Things have been a little bumpy for my uncle since his last post so I have been asked to write his blog and send updates until he starts feeling a little better.
Stem cells haven't been very friendly thus far, however, we've been told that a lot of what is happening is just "par for the course" (no pun intended). His loss of appetite, due to mucositis, an inflammation of the mucus membranes along his throat and esophagus, has made it really difficult to swallow. Supplement drinks have become his new best friend and he hasn't been able to do much but lie around. His hair has fallen out and he no longer has a beard; again, this is all part of the process. I’ve never known my uncle without a ton of hair on his head and a very thick beard, but I’m sure he looks just as good without as he did with it ;)
Here’s where the stem cells start to shoot bogeys… on Monday, he was struck with a fever that got up to 104°, but eventually was taken care of by the wonderful nurses and staff at Northwestern Hospital. The doctors found that the fever was a result of an infection that may have gotten in through the pick line that was used earlier to put the stem cells into his body. That pick line was taken out but caused him to have two blood clots in his left arm. Now he is dealing with his body retaining too much water, which could be a result of his kidneys not working properly. The doctors and nurses are keeping a close watch on that. This, in no way, has been as easy has he had hoped it would be. In fact, it’s kicking his ass but he won’t be giving up the fight anytime soon.
As always, his spirits are high and his positive attitude never seems to falter. We are all very grateful for all of your thoughts and prayers. All of the love and positive energy is giving him strength to push through this.
Until next time,
Becky (Rich's niece)
